Is ruby a good choice for engagement rings?

Yes, ruby rings are a good choice. Princess-cut ruby engagement rings, as well as oval and emerald cut, are popular. Especially if your bride wants colour for their ring.

Rubies bring luxury to your engagement ring because of the symbolism of the ruby. Coupled with the Australian jewellery craftsmanship in our rings, you are bound to find the perfect ring with Camile & Stone.

Another reason we recommend rubies for an engagement ring is because they're durable. Like diamonds, rubies are very hard. They are a 9 on the Mohs scale. This is just a little less hard than diamonds.

This basically means that they're not likely to scratch or get damaged. Some softer gemstones might, but rubies won't. So, they work for everyday wear fine jewellery like an engagement ring.

Are rubies more expensive than diamonds?

Natural ruby engagement rings are never usually more expensive than diamonds. You can actually usually get the same size ruby as a diamond but for much less. This means that for an engagement ring, you will also get more for your money.

Diamonds are the normal stone engagement ring, but they don't have to be. The perfect ruby engagement ring is out there for you or your partner!

While it's not common, there are some rubies that might fetch a higher price than diamonds. These rubies will have incredible colour and carat weight. Rubies are usually 1 carat, but over 2 carats and they become prized.

Can I wear a ruby engagement ring every day?

Yes, you definitely can. Rubies are very hardy and won't damage easily. It is necessary to remember that they're not quite as hard as diamonds though!

White gold ruby engagement rings might be slightly less durable. This is because white gold can be a bit softer than other metals. Rose gold ruby engagement rings on the other hand are hard. This is because rose gold has copper added to it. This makes it a hardier metal.

While you can wear your ruby engagement ring daily, you should also remove it regularly. Remove it to clean it or take it to a jeweller to get it cleaned. This will keep it in good shape your whole life.

Do rubies have special meanings for weddings?

Rubies have lots of meanings. They're a very old stone and have been collected for years. Ancient collectors thought that rubies meant wealth and protection. They were also linked to passion. These beliefs still hold today. Rubies also connote nobility.

An interesting suspicion about rubies is that they must be worn on the left hand. This is lucky because your ring finger is on your left hand. So as an engagement ring, your ruby ring will be lucky too!

What are the most valuable rubies?

Rubies aren't as expensive as diamonds. They are still expensive, we might add, but not quite as much money as diamonds. But there are some very valuable rubies out there. Lots of things affect price, like:

  • Pigeon's blood-red: This colour of ruby is very expensive. It is almost fluorescent and rare. This makes it an expensive stone.
  • Myanmar: Rubies found in Myanmar are usually the most expensive. They're called Burmese rubies (Burma is the old name for Myanmar). In the country, you can find more pigeons blood-red than anywhere else.
  • Heated/unheated: The treatment of rubies affects its price. Unheated tends to be more expensive.
  • Inclusions: These are blemishes inside the ruby. If the rubies are 'eye-clean' they're often more expensive.
  • Cut: Different cuts affect the way rubies look. Oval cut is very popular for this stone.
  • Size: Obviously, the size of a ruby will affect its price. The bigger the more expensive.

Can you find vintage ruby engagement rings?

Vintage ruby engagement rings are easy to come by. Ruby has been a good stone for engagement rings for years. You can find them at estate sales and in vintage shops. Art Deco ruby engagement rings are particularly popular.

Custom ruby engagement rings can also resemble vintage ones. It is an option if you can't find a style you like that's really vintage. A jeweller can make a very good replica of a vintage style for you to wear.

You can also find vintage styles at shops like us! We have some great vintage-style choices if that's your vibe.

Can you get ruby and diamond engagement rings?

Ruby and diamond engagement rings are common. You will recognise the style of a ruby with a diamond halo. It is a style that is associated with luxury.

Ruby can also be paired with other stones. It sometimes works with white sapphire and indeed the blue kind of sapphire. This is a bold and colourful choice. Another blue look is with blue topaz.

You'll also see it with emeralds for a red and green look. And it can work with citrine to add yellow to the red.
