Is Sapphire okay for an engagement ring?

Sapphire gemstones are popular engagement rings. People usually choose the blue sapphire for their engagement ring because of their fame. But white and other coloured sapphires are also used sometimes. A princess-cut sapphire engagement ring looks fantastic.

Sapphire isn't too much softer than diamond. It comes in at a nine on the Mohs scale (diamond is a 10). This makes scratches less likely too. This is another reason its often used as the centre stone in engagement rings.

What do sapphire engagement rings symbolise?

Sapphire actually has lots of symbolism. It can represent:

  • Intelligence and education
  • The ability to make good choices (which could mean quite a lot for an engagement ring!)
  • Wisdom (even as far back as the ancient Greeks!)
  • Purity and chastity (though only in some religious contexts)
  • Divinity (it's known as the 'Divine stone' in Christianity)

Sapphire can also be a status symbol. Many famous people have been given sapphire engagement rings, including Kate Middleton. The sapphire gemstone surrounded by a halo of diamonds is a common dream ring for many.

Are sapphires more expensive than diamonds?

Not usually. Sapphire is usually cheaper than diamonds are. But there are some exceptions. Like if you merge the two for a sapphire and diamond engagement ring, you'll pay more than you would for one or the other.

Additionally, custom sapphire engagement rings will often cost more because they're designed just for you. A custom diamond ring would likely cost more, but a standard diamond ring might not. We have lots of diamond moissanite rings, like the Roxy Ring, for you if you’re looking for an affordable style.

Lastly, vintage sapphire engagement rings can often cost quite a lot. This is because of their history and the fact that sapphires are expensive stones!

You can usually find good vintage styles in shops, just like Camile & Stone. So if you like the look of vintage styles but can't afford the real thing, you could try a ring like our Ballerina Radiant sapphire ring. With its halo, the ring has a vintage feel you might like!

Do sapphires look better in white or yellow gold?

Silver makes the blue stand out so white gold sapphire engagement rings look really good. This is also why a sapphire centre stone with a halo of diamonds looks so good. However, if you prefer gold or rose gold, you can find some great rings in those metals too.

Rose gold sapphire engagement rings add pinkish hues that could work well with blue sapphire. It would also work well with other colours of sapphire. Yellow gold can also balance the blue of sapphire, so choose it if you like it!

What colour of sapphires are the most expensive?

Really vibrant blue stones are usually the most expensive sapphires. There are many blue tones though, so you can still find affordable blue sapphires.

Other expensive sapphire colours are the really vibrant pink tones with a really deep colour. There are also sapphires called padparadscha that are the rarest kind of the stone you can find. This means they're, obviously, the most expensive. They have a peachy kind of colour.

Remember that pairing sapphires with other stones, like diamonds, will make your ring more expensive too.

Can I wear my sapphire engagement ring every day?

Yes, you can, sapphire is very durable. Sapphire ranks at 9 on the Mohs scale which is slightly lower than diamonds. However, this is still a very hard stone. This means it's not easily damaged and you probably won't see scratches.

You still need to actually care for your ring though. Don’t throw it around just because you can!

Never wear it to shower or bathe. You shouldn’t do anything that exposes it to water for too long. This includes swimming! Also, try not to sleep in it lest you cause accidental damage or lose it. If you can, get it cleaned (or clean it yourself) regularly too. Lastly, keep it in a safe place, like a box or pouch when you're not wearing it.

What should I know about sapphire rings?

Below are some of the things to know before you get a sapphire engagement ring.

  • Sapphires aren't just blue. They come in lots of colours, including pink and peach
  • The stone is very hard and even if it's chipped, it can be polished and repaired
  • Natural sapphire engagement rings do exist and include an unpolished sapphire that can look really different
  • Sapphire looks best when cut into an oval or elongated cushion design

What colours of sapphire can I have in my engagement ring?

Blue sapphire engagement rings are the most known but are not the only colours. Other colours include:

  • White sapphire which is often used in engagement rings and looks quite similar to a diamond
  • Yellow tones from very light yellow to a dark gold colour
  • Pink hues which are getting more and more popular. They come in deep pinks to lighter tones
  • Green tones
  • Black!
  • Padparadscha sapphire, which is a very rare peach-coloured stone

On top of this rainbow of colours, there are two other interesting sapphires. First, the star sapphire. This is a really unique type of the stone. It shows a star-shaped reflection and is caused by needle-like inclusions of another mineral called rutile. This is a very sought-after sapphire.

Lastly, red-coloured sapphires are actually known as rubies! They're the same mineral but we know red to be the ruby stone instead.
